My Locale Isle of Man
About Me Pre-Goretex backpacking mainly took in Snowdonia. Visits to the English Lake District started while attending Lancaster University, as did my first backpacking trips to Scotland. A Munro obsession grew, then ended on completion in 1986. No, I never told the record-keepers. Completion was followed immediately by trips to New Zealand, totalling 11 months, and to the Pyrenees. I have also backpacked in the Alps, Iceland, the Philippines, Zion NP and Ireland.

Ultralight Hammock Camping
Just remembered! Ray uses sticks not trekking poles to support his tarp and there are no sticks in many of the best places to camp over here - particularly the high, remote corries of NW Scotlan...

Ultralight Hammock Camping
Perhaps I've got this wrong. I could have sworn there was something about Britain, Scandinavia and NZ in his Ray-Way Tarp book but a quick scan has failed to find it. Anyway, British foul weath...

A light lunch?
This is why I fail to make it as a proper ultralighter - I love my grub! However, one or two things have worked for me, for example, handfuls of toasted muesli eaten in place of biscuits. This is...

Do you hate horses too?
The same as to dogs in the Philippines. But I don't want to sound too strident, and this is part of the forum's Chaff, so here's a description of something I saw while driving near Worcester. ...

Horses and the Great Outdoors
We can't get along because the horseriders don't want to. In the UK when I was a kid, it used to be a class thing. Perhaps there is still a slight hangover of old-fashioned thinking in the horsey...

Horses in the Great Outdoors
On several occasions female horse riders have deliberately tried to ride me down. I stress that in not one case was I doing anything provocative. Perhaps my quietness made me look vulnerable. Th...

Ultralight in Ultra-Foul Conditions?
Having backpacked over 200 Munros in one of the worst summers on record (1986) as well as gaining experience in Iceland and New Zealand, I feel that this is a bit of a specialist subject. So the f...

Youth Participation in Wilderness Activities?
Is this a world wide phenomenon? The better known British hills seem very busy these days. When I started backpacking (it wasn't called backpacking then!) meeting someone led to a ten minute conv...

SuperUltralight SEries
Carol, I'm really enjoying these articles. You'll have to do a follow up series next year. How about SuperUltralight in the Scottish Highlands: Part 1 - Spring Part 2 - Summer Part 3 - Autum...

Hex Tips for a Brit
Christopher, I'll be interested to here how you get on with it in view of a recent midge episode with my otherwise excellent Cave 1.

Integral Designs eVENT Rain Jacket
My rating is for eVent as I've not tried the jacket. I'm just shocked to see Ryan opting for XL and can't help wondering what size I would need. My Montane Air medium is fairly tight. This is at od...

Golite Jam
And a strong 3 from me too. The Jam has been my main pack for approx 18 months. It is close to needing replacement. The foam pad has developed folds as a result of careful use. It is hard to repla...
