Re: PLB use
Are you hiking solo? Do you have cell coverage? Nasty weather? Long trip with no survivable "overdue" time limit? I glad we have options: PLB, SPOT, InReach - and there's also SAT ...

Re: Re: Permission weight
Wow! I always think of the SOS function as something I'll never use. I'd imagine that fellow was sure glad you came wandering along. I'd hate the thought of sitting there with someone w...

Just found a great SPOT app
Google play and search for findmespot. It does what I want which is to give an easy way for my wife to follow my progress with her phone.

Re: Re: Ask me in 50 years when my SVEA 123R needs something
I don't mean to imply that MSR's stoves are inferior - they have a excellent track record. But face it, they have a lower MTBF than the SVEA simply because they have more parts. A wall of r...

Lots of messages and a good webpage
If your checkin didn't get through for two days, I hope it wasn't because you weren't trying to send lots of messages. A key point with the SPOT usage model is that you need to be leavi...

Ask me in 50 years when my SVEA 123R needs something
I'm really not into important gear that has breakable parts. I think that is why I like trangia burners and the SVEA 123R. Every store that sells MSR stoves has a wall with MSR rebuild kits and...

Why did you buy it in the 1st place?
Not sure I follow you. You bought the Gen 3 to save an ounce over the Gen 2? But you didn't read the specs ahead of time? And now you want to return it? I feel sorry for the retailer. The Ge...

Re: Here's a cool idea...
Really good advice. I suspect that seam-sealing is more of a hobby than a necessity nowadays. But the only way to know for sure is to try the gear in the rain, and a sprinkler is a great test. Also...

Depends on the sewing and seam style
I own stuff that doesn't need it - both tarps. So follow the manufacturer recommendations. Oderless mineral spirits will thin out clear Silicone sealer (with a lot of stirring) and makes a grea...

Gen 3 looking good so far
Gen3 hardware quality seems pretty good this time. Gen2 had a big faux pas at launch, requiring a recall. I've been reading the user comments/reviews at REI & Amazon and so far so good. And...

Optimus/Primus? Svea 123R
It is the same weight as other white gas stoves, but with fewer moving parts. It is inherently more reliable over a very long history. It is very fuel efficient and the maximum heat output and flame a...
