About Me Originally from Louisiana, I enjoyed camping in my Boy Scouting days and eventually became an Eagle Scout. Many years later (2002), I discovered backpacking after going on an REI multisport trip to Alaska. My first backpack was to Grand Canyon, and I was hooked!

I checked out the Montbell umbrella in their Boulder store and you have to manually straighten every rib to open it and manually break it down (every rib) before closing. I would never buy an umbre...

My guess is because it can be entirely enclosed nearly to the ground. A flat tarp will have an open end somewhere. Maybe the better term is no flat tarps.

I personally do not need zippers on a bivy that is used as a sleeping bag cover, not waterproof.

The old ones weigh less than 2 oz. OR made both mittens and the claw design in the old form. Weight might be the better way to distinguish.
