If you act like prey it will treat you like prey, don't run.
Agreed, If you act like prey it will treat you like prey, don't run. The person that was killed in Yellowstone last year tried to outrun the bear. His partner who survived, did not run.

Been There, Done That
My problem was that I assumed my compass was broken. I only confirmed that I was going the wrong direction was when I ran into another hiker. It shocked me to the point that I just sat down and ...

Good tip
I do something similar, but your idea is lighter and probably more durable.

SL1
The SL1 is a great shelter. One of my preferred shelters is the Gossamer Gear SpinnShelter. It's very similar design but weighs significantly less. The SL1 material is way overkill. OK for boy...

I have had good success with the Goo(p) style sealants. I have holes in Thermarests that were sealed with a drop of Shoe-Goo style sealants many years ago that seam to hold up quite well. They c...

Yes
The sleeping pad warmth should be similar to the warmth of the sleeping bag/quilt. I learned the hard way when I used a not so warm pad on a winter trip:-)

Tarp
Technically a tarp becomes a tent when you set it up. I find that the most comfortable tent in hot muggy weather is one made from a tarp. You have lots of pitch options from very open on multip...

Crawling Ticks
Ticks tend to not crawl into your gear. They usually hitch rides on passing animals. It is not so common for them to crawl into your shelter. More likely to hitch a ride when you walk through fo...

RailRiders Eco-Mesh Clothing
I wear both the shirt and the pants when sun and/or bugs are an issue. They are light, well ventilated and flexible. Mesh ventilated sleeves on the shirt protects arms from bug and sun. Loose fi...

Melanzana micro grid hoody
Grid fleece is more hydrophobic than standard fleece, but not quite as warm without a shell. Great for cool days. Put a wind shell over the top and you have a warm combination that breaths well and k...

The biggest complaint that people seem to have about this cape is that it doesn't extend below the knees. I personally prefer this as it works better when hiking in rough terrain or when wearing ...

This makes a great summer or emergency ultralight shelter. Add a bivy and it could be used year round. I had problems with the durability of the spinnaker version. A couple tie-outs are starting to...

A good all around tarp. It does not have any mid point tie-outs like Oware and others have. This limits your pitch options, but if all you use is an a-frame or flying diamond pich, this is perfe...
