I received my Marmot Essence in the mail today so I wanted to add a few comments to expand upon my earlier posts. 1) Mine weighs 185g (6.53oz) in Men's medium. 2) The underarm vents don&#...

Cuben is great. Unless you are bushwacking then a poncho tarp is a perfect application for 0.6oz cuben.

I think the weight listed for the 2010 Pinnacle is actually the 2009 weight. So they forgot to update it which is why the Jam appears heavier. How about that new poncho tarp? Using 15D silnylon ...

GoLite must have updated their poncho tarp....probably to use 30D silnylon instead of 70D silnylon I'd guess. I have a GoLite poncho tarp from a year or two back which weighs ~11 oz or so, and ...

I like using the really small cord locks in combination with 1/16 spectra cord. I picked up 300 ft of spectra on eBay for ~$15 and then I grabbed by 'micro' cordlocks from Ultralight Advent...

"Does the Esssence actually give you pit zips, or just a flap-covered pit opening?" I bought an Essence online (which is in the mail) based on my understanding that it had pit zips, but ...

Marmot sells the Essence and Mica jackets which are basically the same thing but the Mica has two hip pockets and the Essence has pit zips and 1 chest pocket instead. Compared to the Triumph Anorak...

Ex Light
I guess we'll get an update on the loft of the Ex-Light next week when Will's BPL review on that jacket is released.

My understanding is that the Mica and Essence are basically the same jackets with just different features, so yes they should fit the same. With the Essence you get pit zips and 1 breast pocket, wh...

Mountain Laurel Designs Cuben DuoMid
The DuoMid is the best shelter for solo hikers. Don't be misled by the "Duo" in its name - you could cram two hikers in here but it's poorly suited for that (ie. no vestibule space, ...

I love this FireLite Mini. It's the only thing that I 100% trust to start a fire. With a mini Bic you can run out of gas, be at too high of an altitude, get it wet or get it oily. Matches can ...
