Re: wp gloves
I thought about nitrile, but when I weighed them they were almost twice as heavy as my latex gloves. I really mostly carry the wp gloves for emergencies, so durability is not such a big deal. Sil...

Re: cuben bag
Naaah. On fair-weather nights you just use it like a quilt. Stick your feet out or just sleep on the bag instead of under it. Mosquitos would be my biggest worry with this system! In hind sig...

Re: Sub 1 lb. XUL : Possible or BS?
It's always interesting to read what others consider "essential". I wouldn't bother with the fire-starting stuff, the medical kit, the water treatment or the bivy. I would just ...

Latex gloves
I always carry a pair of latex surgical gloves (even on day trips). They can be used against rain, wind, and other folks blood as well as doubling up as VBL in and emergency. Not much weight for ...

Re: Flat, frozen bags
Sounds like one of those situations Ryan referred to where even synthetics would reach their limit of usefullness. A lesson I learned early on, which is why I always carry a bivy bag, even on ...

I also wouldn't assume that the person we are discussing doesn't have good local knowledge of the JMT either. Chances are he scoped it out for water supplies, sheltered camp sites or caves...

Re: Aboriginals...
Yes, and the NZ Maoris seemed to survive with little more than flax skirts and holes dug into the ground in a less than "ideal" climate too. Water probably wasn't as big a problem fo...

Re: Re: Re: Sub 1 lb. XUL : Possible or BS?
I believe the Australian Aboriginals, the Kalahari folks, and many other "experienced' traditional hikers could go bush indefinitely with little more than something to hunt or fish with an...

Re: Re: Is humidity/fog enough to completely collapse down loft?
I think there comes a point of saturation where no synthetic will keep you warm. As for moisture from the shell, this is a possibility, as Ryan's "surface-to-down" ratio was pretty h...

Re: theoretically down can easily be kept completely completely dry
Rick, the waterproof cover would be a disaster as your own body moisture would quickly saturate the down because it couldn't escape. You would be better off using the waterproof fabric as a VB...

I thought it better to keep the Packa reviews in one place, so this applies to the 2009 medium/large Packa. To be honest, I wanted a Roger Caffin style poncho, but could see it was going to take me m...
