2013 Plans
I did pretty well after reading Craig's "no new gear" post last year. I think it was Craig. Did find a bargain on a used Nunatak that I had always wanted. But the downside was I turne...

Guadalupe Mountains There Weren't (aka How We Went to Lost Maples Instead)
And that is why I do all my sleeping bag testing in the back yard! Be glad you didn't go to the Guadelupes, the wind was howling up here in Christmas day. Sustained was around 30mph, I think, w...

Getting older, as good as u were 10 years ago?
Not as good as I was 10 years ago, but the stories keep getting better and better. Knee surgery tomorrow, we'll see what happens next. I'm thinking I should have been up skiing just in case.

2012 Mariposa Sizing
Based on my experience, the newer GG packs seem to run bigger. I used to get a large, but now I'm in a medium. Hey, if it doesn't fit, you can always swap it. Or get them to send both, and ...

Houdini's 37.83on sale at REI-Outlet
I like my Houdini, but it is the most hideous orange. So tempting. And theoretically, if you use fatwallet.com, you can get another 6%.

Winter backpacking and 2WD cars with chains?
For a lot of years, vast numbers of people worked out in snow with nothing but 2wd and chains, and did fine. Forces you to be a good driver and plan, but it works. When I was a kid, it wasn't u...

Backing packing meals from Big box stores
Fry and freeze some hanmburger, it will last for a day. Add it to instant mashed potatoes. If you have any dried veggies, add those too.

Marmot Atom Mens Regular 40 Degree
Nice bag. 1/2 zipper is kind of a pain, and makes it hard to use as a quilt. Seems true to rating.

Replaced my Exos 58 with this, much more comfortable, with more weight. Got a deal on a 2008 model, and added the dual stays. A lot bigger pack than I'll use most of the time. Gained some weight o...

ULA Circuit
Switched to this for more durability, and the ability to carry more water in the desert. Works like a champ, and you couldn't ask for better customer service.

I have to ding it a little for the hip belt. I think the hip belts on the large runs small, because it didn't wrap around me enough to be effective. And that may not be fair to ding it, because al...

Golite Ultra 20
Mine kept me warm in the upper 20s, so I'm happy. I'm not completely sure it would reach 20, and keep you warm for 8 hours. But it's a great product for a great price.
