My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: Yellowstone Area

Re: Do you ever use a hip belt?
Hip belt good especially when weight gets above 15 or 20 pounds. I always use it. Some packs have more comfortable. Never use sternum strap. I don't want a strap across chest inhibiting b...

Re: Re: Re: Experiments in ultralight solar
I have noticed that some devices pull as much current as possible until the voltage goes down to 4.8 volts (or so). Like, I have a USB power supply that charges like this. After it gets charged...

Re: quilt rated 50.
if the lows were 25 F and you wore a down jacket, I think a 40 F quilt would be fine. 50 F quilt would be pushing it. If "sleep warm" means you need less insulation than the average per...

Re: Filtering Water
Some of the time I don't filter, if it's out of an alpine stream or out of a spring. I always carry my Squeeze. It's so easy to use I usually use it, even if the water looks good.

Re: Re: Filtering Water
Except this is all a con. No need to filter water at all. Let's triple treat just to sell more stuff : )

Re: Re: Re: Fabric Testing and a Few Surprises
