My Locale Northern Virginia
About Me I've been a camper all my life. BK: (before kids) the wife and I would throw our bikes and a little wheeled trunk in the back of the plane and head for the boonies just about every weekend. AK: Camping was a rarity, but we took day hikes with the kids. Now the kids are on their own and we've discovered lightweight backpacking. Been doing it for three years. Base pack weight is 14lb and decreasing. Tent is now a Hennessy Hyperlight and I've replaced the Miniworks with a Sawyer.

Re: How much primer are you carrying?
Bryce, I carry a tiny bottle of odorless charcoal lighter to start my stove. It takes about 10 drops on a small piece of fiberglass cloth at the bottom of the stove to get a fire going. That...

This article could have been better
I was surprised by the primitive state of the art of lightweight backpacking wood stoves and frankly what I would deem unacceptable reporting standards. The latter refers in part to the unverified...

Another alternative strap
Incensed by the high price of a longer Hennessy tree hugger, a friend of mine went to the Home Depot and bought one of those webbing straps with a ratcheting tensioner. The webbing was rated to 15...

making it lighter
Great photo's and narrative. Instead of folding the air cut-outs out of the way, why not remove them altogether? Get rid of a few grams of steel.

Why I use a wood stove
I think a wood stove gives me the best of both worlds. My fully enclosed titanium stove adds 4 ounces to my pack, but it is much more fuel efficient than an open fire. A few twigs will boil 2 cup...

Re: charcoal?
The Katadyn charcoal looks like granules; about the size of espresso grind. I noticed similar material in water filters for coffee makers at Wal-Mart. Can't remember how the price compared th...

Brett, I use a sawyer 0.1 micron filter too, but viruses can get through it so I add the CDC recommended 2 drops of unscented bleach per liter. You don't like chemicals and neither do I so ...

My first (and only) hammock was (and is) a Hennessy Hyperlight (not to be confused with the Ultralight which is a few ounces heavier. I haven't looked at other hammocks because I've been e...
