My Locale Colorado Rockies
About Me I'm 45 years old, 6'4" and 195 lbs. I've backpacked in the Colorado Rockies, the Wasatch and Uinta mountains, and in Zions National Park. I mountain bike in the Colorado Rockies. I've kayaked in Yellowstone and on Flaming Gorge, and rafted the Green, Colorado and Snake rivers. My trips are usually a week long or less. I love to hike wherever I can. I'm an Assistant Scout Master and I'm often out with the Scouts. My immediate goal is to thru-hike the Colorado trail. I've lived in Utah, Ohio, Illinois, Argentina, California, and Colorado.

Re: Prescott-Flagstaff-Grand Canyon mountain bike trip
Dave, thanks for the trip report! An 80 mile day in the dirt, wow! The best I've done is 54 miles on the Mickelson Trail in South Dakota. You inspire me to try some overnighters with my bike. I...

Re: Salomon Laces fraying

Re: Thermarest Prolite 4 Sleeping Pad Used with GoLite Jam2
I have the Prolite 4 and the first generation Jam. I've tried Ben's approach and the barrel method. They both work. The trick is to leave some air in the mattress and close the valve. This ...

Re: GoLite Chrome Dome? or other umbrellas
I just bought the Montbell Ultralight Treking Umbrella. It's a little lighter at 5.2 oz and seems tough enough, but I need to actually put it to the test. I had it on an outing this past weeken...

Re: Merino wool baselayer - which one?
I wear merino wool every day, all year long and have done so for many years. I generally favor Ibex with the exception of my Smartwool Shadow Hoody which is, in my opinion, a nearly perfect base la...

Re: Re: Re: Dealing with wet footwear
Do you dry your Smartwool socks by wearing them wet, or do you switch pairs? Also, to what temps do you use this system? When it gets to freezing, do you switch to boots or Gore-tex trail shoes?...

Re: Re: Help me choose a fleece jacket
David, If you are debating between a long sleeve crew and a long sleeve zip, I would go for the long sleeve zip. You'll appreciate the zipper when it's warm. I've not had wear pr...

Re: Dealing with wet footwear
I wear Salomon Tech Amphibs and Smartwool Utralight Micro Cycling socks. Like Mike, I rotate between 2 pairs so I always have a dry pair at night. Sometimes I have to hang a pair to dry over night...

Re: Keep the comments coming
David, I just thought I would add my voice to those not wearing fleece when it's above 40° F. Last July I spent a week backpacking in the Indian Peaks of the Colorado Rockies. When on the mo...
