Avvy gear
I would recommend education and an emphasis on routefinding/area selection. A lot of weekend hikers lock themselves into a destination in advance of knowing the avvy forecast - bad idea. Also, c...

Lamp Shade
How much does the lamp shade weigh? I use an outback oven cover for the same thing (it fits over my 4l MSR pot). The oven cover weighs around 100g and folds up small.

Keep us updated
Brian, please update us on your experience. I am very curious to see how things work out. One thing I will be trying this winter is replacing the puffy mitts with the lightweight vbl mitts sold ...

Melting snow in black bag
Some people suggest using a clear plastic bag over the black plastic bag. Also, put the bag on an insulated surface like a stove pad. I've tried melting snow in just a black plastic bag here...

Stacking Pads
Richard's comments on stacking pads got me thinking. Two ridgerests stacked would creat a lot of air pockets between the pads, or a ridgrest on a z-rest (or some other pads) - if a ridgerest...

SPOT performance
My SPOT has worked well for me here in the PNW. Oddly, it is 100% in the backcountry, even in trees, by cabins, and low down, but is 50/50 when I tested it in the city. I'm curious if som...
