I think drawing a trail in Caltopo then using the "Export" button to make a KML file for Google Earth is your best bet. I've done it before and it is pretty cool.

Good points Bob, I personally like the idea of a big map I can spread out better then a GPS or a phone. OTOH reading a paper map while sitting in a packraft might be rather awkward but a quick GPS...
