Is REI your only local store? If so, you can order the GG Escape online from them (and the Nimbus Trace 62 if you want to try that), have it delivered to the store, pick it up and fit it and try it...

I wear my dirty laundry. The only extra thing I might have is a second pair of socks. Those are probably hanging from my pack drying or stowed somewhere. But I don't worry about dirt/dirtiness....

Sounds like you used open cell foam which will absorb quite a bit of moisture/water. Closed cell foam won't, which is what most backpacking pads are made of.
