My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: Boil times
Maybe "boil" time is just a name, you don't really have to bring to rolling boil. To kill bad stuff in the water, someone on this site said you have to only bring it to 180 F or so...

I haven't seen the test of a star or finger reinforcement.

"That might get pretty old after the first three or four times, especially if you have to take off a backpack to get to the solar panel or battery." You really only have to worry about...

Re: Lightweight battery charging
There's some voltage drop across a reverse-battery blocking diode so you lose some charging capacity, especially if the solar panel voltage is just barely high enough. If you're there ke...

Re: The New MSR MicroRocket -- First Look
Maybe increased clearance above burner would make it burn more efficiently - more pints of water boiled per fuel canister That would be worth more than saving 0.5 oz

Re: Site Selection
"hike high and camp low" If you camp under tree cover (while avoiding Mary's Widow Makers) you'll avoid radiative heat loss If you camp among trees the wind will be less. I...

Re: Thanks Guys!
One thing a bit tricky with pants patterns is to get the butt shaped correctly. Not too tight or loose. Hard to know how to alter it if it's shaped incorrectly.
