My Locale San Francisco Bay Area
About Me I backpacked and climbed a lot from 1972 through the 1980s using a heavy-weight approach. In the 1990s other things filled my time. In 2001 I was again backpacking, but with a light weight approach. Most of my trips are to the sierras with a base weight normally around 9lbs.

Re: Shelter
I am sure that anywhere could have winds that tarp tents can't handle, but I think the tahoe area in mid-summer is one of the most unlikely locations. Winds, especially in the evenings tend to ...

Re: 2011-2012 Recommended waterproof/breathable jackets?
+1 on eVENT. I like the Rab Minimalist though I haven't had a chance to use it a lot. The Montane Air and Westcomb Specter LT looked nice on paper, but didn't fit me well. If you don'...

I would be interested if you end up comparing the GGVT to the 2012 Gorilla. I switched from the VT to the original Gorilla when it first came out. I thought the VT was slightly more comfortable, ...

Re: Re: Important feature for night hiking
Rather than the LD01 (which would be my choice of the options you provided) I would suggest the iTP A3 Upgraded. Cheaper and I like the brightest settling more than the LD01 (1/2 of LD01 on the tw...

Re: Granite Gear Crown V.C. 60 -vs- Vapor Trail
Is there anyone who had a great experience using the Vapor Trail and has now used the Crown VC? If so, any thoughts about how the two packs compare when it comes to carry comfort? The reason I ask...

Re: Whats the best way to stay dry in the rain
Give up on being dry until you are secure in your shelter. As others have pointed out, focus on staying warm enough and keeping the contents of your backpack dry. In warmer conditions I think Jerry...

Re: Weight gain on backpacking trip
as others have observed, it could be weight gain due to water retention due to extra salt, though my reading of medical lit seems to indicate it's a minor of people who have excessive water gai...

I typically use my iPhone. It's powered off most of the time. It gets powered on if I need to double check position via GPS, if I am on a peak and want to send my daughter a text, and mostly f...

Sealskinz Ultra Grip Black Glove
I tried these for part of a season and gave up. My fingers often felt cold and damp. Deterity isn't as good as I would have expected given the modest thickness of these gloves. I hated them.
