There are roads/routes/trails that lead up to Lyons Reservoir, Donnell Reservoir...and from there you can get to Pinecrest Lake etc. Not a very efficient way to go...

Depends on what time of year. GCT is something that is spectacular earlier in the season, when the waterfalls are booming. Less so later on. I usually choose the high country over deep canyon...
