About Me I have been backpacking on and off in the western US since college in the early 1970's. Summer 1970 a bunch of us spent a week in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Oregon barefoot with blankets, book bags, and no proper gear at all. Now I coordinate youth backpacking for our Camp Fire council, and enjoy taking the kids to the mountains. I hope to take up more long distance walking after retirement.

Re: nice trip
You are very perceptive. My law license is not currently active, but yup, there's a J.D. on my resume. How about you? Robert didn't use that soap *at all*! Which led to the moment of ...

Re: KlearWater
I've used it on a couple of weekend trips recently. It seems to work just fine. At least it tastes fine, was easy to use, and I didn't get sick, and I was hiking in central Texas, which is...

Re: Re: Using Espresso Pods for pack-it-out backpacking
I, too, have been using finely ground coffee from home, stirring it into the boiled water in the pot, and after steeping, pouring it through an MSR filter into cups. Works very well, tastes great,...

Fire starting
Thanks for that site on fire starting! I have recently been working with our Camp Fire teens on this. Many of us nowadays seem to feel that if we've read about some technique, we know how to ...

Just found this thread, which died down a couple of weeks ago. My picture is my daughter (now 23) and me in the Hoh Valley at Olympic National Park in June 2006. It was the first time in severa...

Re: Definition of open fires
I think we are talking about two definitions here, or maybe three. In many areas, at least in the backcountry, there is a "no ground fires" rule. You can use a backpacking fuel stove, a...

The other place in Texas that you are probably thinking of, that has maples that turn bright in the fall, is McKittrick Canyon at Guadalupe Mountains National Park. I have backpacked that park too...
