My Locale Boulder, CO
About Me I started backpacking as a teenager in southern appalachia. My summers in college were spent in mountain heaven, glacier national park. Since then, I've lived and played in the high sierras, the cascades, and now the colorado front range. Walking into the mountains for a few days with a light pack never seems to lose its charm. Also a snapper of many photos. Check out my instagram for short visual trip reports and such.

down pants
Just a thought, but since you already have a nice down jacket, a pair of UL down pants might take you further than upping the fill weight in your jacket by a couple oz. A pair of borah gear or Luke...

merino air
I was sitting on a gift certificate, and that merino air looked to promising not to try at 7.3 oz. The fit looks maybe not long enough, but I'll see when I try it on. As much as I like polartec...

Good topic, been thinking about the same recently. I haven't brought a sleep shirt or long johns backpacking in a very long time b/c I think there's just better more functional alternatives...

mark 4
Sort of relieved that the rumor wasn't true about the larger sensor, although I'm sorry to get people excited about it. There's little to tempt me away from my 3 here. Having gone from ...

I've been very happy with my marmot essence after using it close to a year now. Breathability is good for a wpb, its fairly comfortable and stretchy (not stiff and crinkly), and its been surpri...

I tried on that montbell hoody at the store and I like it a lot. The material is thin and breathable and has a 3d structure so it should wick well. Its the same material as their lightest base. The...

I've had great luck with my zpacks hexamid tarp and probably have somewhere around 150 nights in it. I wore through a hmg cuben hybrid pack in a matter of months (which included a lot of heavy ...

This was from a 5 day ski traverse in march. Its only my second trip using it, but hopefully many more to come. There are more photogenic tents, esp if you wanna put your tent in a night exposure e...

I think shane is after our techy hearts here at bpl. Seems like a pretty cool fabric solution they came up with too. Pretty happy with the new marmot essence though, which I've been hiking with...

another consideration
Although a micro 4/3's sensor has its advantages, I do think that the mark 1-3 with their 1 inch sensors strikes a nice balance between pixel density and depth of field. For most landscape work...

Rand was really helpful on two stove purchases. Answered all questions almost immediately and helped get a sidewinder made for me at a moment's notice for a trip. Couldn't as for better custom...

I'm very impressed with this pack. I tried out a few packs for a planned AT thru hike (didn't pan out yet), and this was far and a away my favorite. With the stay and sitpad, the pack conforms...
