Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey is a must read. Like really. Go buy it right now. I would also recommend "Encounters with the Arch-druid" by John McPhee.

Try Pack Before Buying
Bought my GG Mariposa after having Glen lend me one of his for a 14 day Philmont Trek. I don't think that fit is a big deal with a frameless pack compared to a framed one however.

Mountain House Flameless heater
Looks like the same thing used in MREs, wich from the Marines I've talked to, are also really useful as handwarmers after dinner as they stay warm for a while.

Food bag size
I use the Zpacks Blast food bag, it's about 730ci and Joe claims it will hold 5-7 days of bulky food. Seems about right.
