Re: Sierra Nevada Red Fox in Yosemite
Awesome. I've had two close fox (not red fox) encounters. Once while running at Pinnacles around dusk I stopped to enjoy the sunset and moments later a fox sauntered across the trail not 10 fee...

Re: Re: Re: Can I use a Hoover Wilderness Permit to access the JMT?
For Whitney Portal specifically you need an exit stamp. For any other trailhead exit e.g. Onion Valley, Cottonwood Lakes or whatever, regardless of whether they are in Hoover or not you don't.

Re: Overnight Snowshoe Trip in Yosemite ~ December 2014
Nice one Andy. Even with the promise of two sleeping bags I can't get my wife to come snow camping. I'm jealous of even the small amount of snow you two had.

Re: Ultralight Hunting: Towards a Coherent Definition
Unlike skiing, packrafting, or fatbiking, hunting isn't something I see myself doing even over the next 5-10 years. But it's always refreshing to read a thorough and well-conceived analysis...

Anyone is welcome to join, hope all who have expressed interest can make it! We can probably muster up a few extra fishing rods if people need them.

Re: Re: Re: Ice Is Nice But Snow Is Better
We probably did about 40 miles total. 12, 10, 18 approximately each day. The snowshoes are Northern Lites Elite, I think 42 oz/pair. They are really light, but the crampons are sub-par compared to ...

Re: Ice Is Nice But Snow Is Better
I was able to save quite a bit of weight due to the warmer-than-average forecast and the lack of snow: -No snow shovel -Groundsheet instead of bivy -Smaller pot since we knew we wouldn't h...

Ice Is Nice But Snow Is Better
This is winter in California? Oh, yeah, this is winter. Probably shouldn't have left the crampons in the car. Oh well, the snowshoes worked. Things warmed up after t...

zpacks Company
I had the same experience as everyone else here. Joe got me a customized piece of gear on time and was very responsive to my questions and requests. Can't do much better than that.

The Ohm is my go-to pack for trips that don't require a bear can. You can fit a Bearikade in it, but it's not very comfortable because it bulges into your back. I put a plastic frame sheet fro...
