My Locale Arkansas Ozarks
About Me Eagle Scout. I spent 9 summers on Camp Orr Adventure Base staff, BSA, Buffalo National River. I love my home in the Ozarks, but constantly wish for the grandeur that I see in the West, or in Europe. I'm the father of one boy, born for the trail. I blog a little about my experiences out there. I'm working on a mini-seminar to do with the local Boy Scout troops. Something like "Introduction to Lightweight Backpacking". I was also approached recently for help with bridge building on the Ozark Highlands Trail. We'll have to see about that though.

pot stand
Konrad, you may have nailed it. I have to admit that I didn't think of using existing items. The chicken wire would work, but it seems to me that I'd need some space below the pot for the s...

Thanks Konrad. I may go with some type of design like that. I'll turn my engineer brother into my new best friend likely.

Jack, this will sound strange, but I think I may have crossed paths with you out there. Then again, there were plenty of beards like yours. We(a group of 4 guys) started at Fontana Dam on Mar 19 an...

What clothes to bring...
I've never ventured out that far north. But, as a forum lurker I like to peep at the gear lists that peeps have sent in. It usually tips me off to where I am wasting ounces. I usually look at t...

alternative to Aqua Mira
Andrew, I have no idea of the quantity you would need. I like Aqua Mira best, but I'd consider Polar Pure for a longer thru-hike. You can treat way more water per bottle with it. Look into it.

WM sizing
I'm 5'11"+ , 220 lbs. The regular works for me with hardly any play room. In fact, I have a tendency to compress the fill in the toe area. I'd advise holding out for the 6'6&qu...

I'll be on the lookout for Bolthouse juices now. I was going to give 32 oz. Powerade bottles a try. The weight on mine were 1.75oz. Yours beat mine. I wanted a taller bottle with less girth is ...

Osprey Exos 46
Short and simple. I dig the smaller straps and buckles. I was initially concerned about the buckles and (thin) waist belt, but that has proven to be unfounded. I have about 100 miles on the pack and n...
