At 40 degrees, I'd ditch the mittens, beanie, and both silk layers, and add a synth puffy as others have said, plus minus a wind shirt. Down to 30 F, I routinely get by with what I'm wearin...

Thanks guys. Your comments are much appreciated. @Dale- Those are the alpina red tails, an inexpensive do-all backcountry ski. The dimensions are 68 / 60 / 65 mm, so not too fat. @Greg- I do ...

The three compression straps provide such a stable platform for the skis that I'm not too worried. After two years of doing it that way, there is still no visible wear.
