My Locale Southeast
About Me I've been backpacking for several years, and am not an ultralight guy...I'm probably teetering on the line between light weight and traditional. I normally carry 25 - 35 lbs (total weight including food and water). I typically go on 5 - 6 trips a year consisting of weekend trips with a longer (1 - 2 weeks) one mixed in there. I have been section hiking the AT since late '07, and am a quarter of the way through it. Other than the AT and local hikes I have also hiked in the Sierras and Southern Utah.

Re: Poles
Got in a little late on this one, but I think your choice was a good one. Although I don't have experience with BD poles they should be plenty rugged for you to get some good experience using ...

Re: insights sought on how to pack tarptents please
I have 2 Tarptents (Double Rainbow and Squall), and I just stuff them. I don't use the supplied stuff sack, but rather an OR sil-nylon sack that is shorter but larger in girth than the supplie...

I have something similar (or maybe even the same) to what you described. If you get bored and want to read about it I posted on in detail here: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackingl...

Steripen - usage with soft sided container
I know this was already covered once and I debated on resurrecting the thread, but I thought a new thread would be a better way to have this discussion. So I'm about to embark on the Steripe...

Re: GG Lightrek 4 Pole Strength
I'm 6'-5", but weigh considerably less than you (about 195 lbs). Nonetheless, I use LT4s at what is probably getting close to their maximum usable height. I have found that they seem...

Good review, I've had similar issues
I've posted some of my experiences with the Hyperflow on BPL and another site or two. Following is the history of my Hyperflow. I bought it in 2008 when it first came out on the market, and i...

Re: ULA pack question
I have a 2009 Circuit, and I use the side pockets for my water. I carry two 1 liter platypus bottles, and 1 drinking tube (get a 1 liter Hoser and it comes with the bottle and the tube). I typical...

Love the Crocs
I'm going to politely disagree with the Croc bashing. It's pretty darn nice having a pair of airy footwear to put on around camp at night. I section hike the AT and run into thrus all the...

I have a similar setup that I just started using. Haven't had it out with my POE Ether pad yet though (I have been using my Z-Lite/Prolite combo since it's been cold), but I think my pad m...

Re: Summer AT clothing
It would be nice to get some more specifics on where exactly you are going. I can’t speak for the NE, but the SE and presumably the mid-Atlantic states are likely to be quite warm during that pe...

I’ve been using this headlamp (both the original and newer version) for years. The reviewers above pretty much covered everything with this headlamp, so I am not going to repeat all that. It’s light...

I have used this tent many nights over the last few years. It has been my main inclement weather/winter tent, so it typically sees the worst weather I go out in. Well, let’s get right into this. ...
