My Locale Boulder, CO
About Me I started backpacking as a teenager in southern appalachia. My summers in college were spent in mountain heaven, glacier national park. Since then, I've lived and played in the high sierras, the cascades, and now the colorado front range. Walking into the mountains for a few days with a light pack never seems to lose its charm. Also a snapper of many photos. Check out my instagram for short visual trip reports and such.

urban gear testing
OK, I'll stop with the urban gear testing after this (injury is a good excuse right?), but I just thought I'd add that last night was very windy in boulder (up to 70mph gusts) and I hung ou...

Re: Mirage
@Dan We have a montbell store in town where I recently tried on the mirage. I'm 6'2" 170 and I like the fit of the medium better. Arms were fine.

quick update
Quick update: Going with the nuclei. The MH is nice & the thermal q seems quite warm, but the nuclei had more articulated fit with longer sleeves & a better hood. I stood outside in breezy ...

Re: Re: inscendo
I thought they used the same fabric too but after being surprised by the lack of breathabilty on the inscendo I checked the arc sit and it uses lumin while the squeamish uses gossamera.

Nice article. I don't have much experience with cross country skis, so I can't make a comparo, but I will say that my friend on XC skis was struggling to keep up with me on a classic XC tra...

I saw one of these the other day at REI & did a breath test on it. Not very scientific but it didn't seem very breathable at all. Very hard to push breath out of it, almost like quantum. Ot...

nuclei arrived
Damn, zappos is fast. I ordered the nuclei in a M and L to decide between along with a thermostatic hooded in a M. I'll write up a quick comparison when I get the thermostatic, and let you know...

anyone tried a montane mountain star?
Since breathable windshirts seems to be a hot topic around here, I'm curious to see if anyone has used the montane mountain star trail shirt.

Thanks for the feedback on the RD, Dan. I have a few windshirts I like a lot, but the fit is not great on any of them. The MEC T2 in a medium is the best fitting baselayer I've found for my 6&#...

I usually go with 2 or 3 depending on the trip. I like a very thin liner sock to sleep in (or hiking if needed) a thin pair of toe socks & either darn tough ultralight ski socks or compression ...

I'm very impressed with this pack. I tried out a few packs for a planned AT thru hike (didn't pan out yet), and this was far and a away my favorite. With the stay and sitpad, the pack conforms...
