My Locale Bridger Mountains
About Me I backback most frequently in the Rockies, and most often take three-day trips. Over the past fifteen years I've served as a Forest Service volunteer in Wyoming and Montana, doing trail maintenance. As I get older I'm always looking for ways to lighten my pack load but I'm far from ultralight. I especially like base camp trips, with day hikes from a fixed camp.

Som packraft suggestions
Veronique, I second Travis's recommendation about the skirt. It's your best defense against cold and saves frequent bailing. Packrafts are extraordinarily buoyant but without a skirt it ...

I have owned a Mystery Ranch BDSB (now the Grizzly, I think) for many years, and before that I had a Dana Design Terraplane (bozeman made, before Dana sold out). These backs carry as well as any I&...

In order of importance: 1. Like Tom, body parts. Good luck and ibuprofen have helped. 2. My two Bibler tents, each 15+ years old. Great tents, don't need replacing. 3. Western Mountain...

Arc Alpinist
I've been comfortable in mine with a down mat down to 10-15 F, in a tent. Mine has two ounces of overfill and a differential cut, and is slightly larger than an Arc Alpinist, more like an Arc A...

Great pack
I used an earlier version for 15+ years, took me that long to destroy it. Not ultralight but a great pack. Go for it somebody!

One quilt for all conditions
Veronique, I agree with Chris that there is no one-size-fits-all-temperatures quilt. That said, a Nunatak Back Country Blanket is a remarkably versatile sleeping quilt. Like you, I am a cold ...

If the Bechler is part of the route, I strongly recommend early September at the earliest. The southwest corner of the Park is the lowest point in the Park and is boggy and buggy through August. An...

Introduction to Packrafting September 2009
A great way to spend three days, and a great course. Four instructors for eight students (difficult to improve on that ratio), all of them knowledgeable, friendly, and good at instructing. Great scen...
