My Locale Western US
About Me Mostly 2 to 3 day loops, with a couple weeklong trips too, likely going 2 weeks or more with upcoming severance. Lightening up but with an eye towards toughness and hiking convenience (secure drying on the trail. quick set up, etc...), but also a bit better food (and beverage) for most overnights. Then again I might want to do a spartan "fast n'light" overnight ... and the gear closet grows.
I'll update my gear list tomorrow ...

Forest svc budget
Might have to do with generating more revenue since the increase in forest fires has depleted their firefighting budget for the second year in a row. http://www.outsideonline.com/news-from-the-f...

Watching the flash flood?
@GGrey - They are powerful but I try to be elsewhere on vacation during the southwest "monsoons" season myself (usually right after the 4th of July). Many roadways can get flooded too.

Re: Hiker killed in bear attack in northern New Jersey
The victim is reported to be a 22 year old male, so running away isn't the smartest move (provokes the predator chase instinct I've read). Despite being big, black bear can move with aston...

Sleeping bag and pack color
For my quilts, one side needs to be black for quicker drying. For summer packs I prefer a subdued color (right now "grid gray" or "black") as to blend in mostly for wildlife b...
