My Locale Hampton Roads, Virginia
About Me I am a 61 year old PhD research physicist. With the kids gone we can occasionally afford to fly off to other parts of the country for backpacking and kayaking trips. I dream of going to Nepal, the Alps, and New Zealand, or back to Alaska.

I make a lot of my own UL equipment: pyramid tent, tarps, net tents, quilts, wind shirts and pants, jackets, kayaking gear, etc.

UL kayak camping is great, you get a real advantage over traditional paddlers who take everything, including the kitchen sink.

RE: Bacon Jerky
Do you cook the bacon first, or just dehydrate it raw? Usually they say not to dehydrate raw pork (or chicken or other shellfish or...). Bacon is smoked a bit, not sure if it's smoked enough,...

Re: Need a new camera
I've never regretted spending what seemed at the time to be too much on a camera (within reason, of course). In the 1970's I purchased a very nice Rollei 35LED. Years later I realized I...

RE: Couples gear
We've used a RayWay two-person quilt (split-zip and draft-stoppers) for many years now with great success. The draft stoppers help a lot when one of us (i.e. me) moves around at night. I se...

I've had similar experiences with my 3-piece twist-lock Komperdell Titanal poles I bought way back in 2006. We've bent them on a number of occasions and just pulled them apart, carefully a...

RE: Having trouble drilling Aluminum
There are special bits for drilling sheet metal, the end of the bit is almost perpendicular to the shaft of the bit, very shallow cutting angle. They almost look like an end mill. Sometimes machi...

Sierra Designs customer service
A number of years ago I pulled out my SD Dome tent right before a camping trip (original model, very light 4-season 3-person tent for 1980, under 7 lbs) and found that the shock cords in the poles had...

I purchased a 35LED right after it came out in the late 1970's. The first model had a faulty on/off switch and they replaced it for free. From that day on I had nothing but praise for the little...
