Re: Zpacks 10 deg. To Replace WM Ultralite and Versalite?
I used to own a WM Ultralite and sold it for a quilt. The quilt I got instead, a Katabatic Alsek, has 12.4 oz of down. After 25+ nights in both the Alsek and the WM Ultralite, I decided that they w...

Re: Petzl diffuser vs Black Diamond spot and flood modes
I've got a Spot. Flood mode casts a nice wide beam and is great for night hiking. The spotlight mode is a really bright but narrow beam, best used for trying to peer at stuff far away. I only r...

Re: Backpacking/Packrafting in the Everglades?
Manfred, The first backpacking trip I ever did was in Florida, five days on the Florida Trail. It was great - lots of cool plants I had never seen before. The highlight of the trip was at the en...

Re: hatchet?
Paul, the hatchet was a bit of an indulgence and more for fun than necessity... It would have come in handy if we had a fire the second night when everything was wet, but we just got in our tarps a...

Sorry you couldn't make it Justin. Seems like everybody is out of vacation time or otherwise indisposed this time of year. Plenty of time left yet for shoulder season trips. No on the micro ...

First snow of the year in Yosemite's Clark Range
Despite the temptation to hide out under our tarps all morning, we eventually headed out into the white. The clouds socked everything in for the rest of the day. Upper Chain Lake was beau...

First snow of the year in Yosemite's Clark Range
Then round two on Saturday night... this time, about 4" of fluffy powder. James' Hexamid did an admirable job of keeping him dry despite the weather. My Trailstar held up just fine to...

zpacks Company
I had the same experience as everyone else here. Joe got me a customized piece of gear on time and was very responsive to my questions and requests. Can't do much better than that.

ULA Ohm
The Ohm is my go-to pack for trips that don't require a bear can. You can fit a Bearikade in it, but it's not very comfortable because it bulges into your back. I put a plastic frame sheet fro...
