My Locale Southeast Alaska
About Me We are primarily kayakers who travel as light as possible on long trips here in Southeast Alaska. There are a lot of similarities between our paddling style and the ultra light approach noted here. My wife bought me the account for a holiday, and as incentive for me to return to multi-day backpacking.

Re: Gas Permeability and OPSAKs
I was asked to test drive the OPSAKS a few years ago after they had been reworked to make them more durable. They are certainly waterproof when closed correctly, and I believe them to be odor proo...

Re: Bear avoidance and packing your cookware
Most of the food we eat when backpacking just needs hot water to "cook". Our mugs are cleaned after use and the pot smells like smoke, all are placed in the kitchen area at our camp. We ...

Skurka's Alaska-Yukon Expedition
I had an email from a friend in Kiana, which is near Kotebue, who had sighted Andrew Skurka. Not clear if he has passed the village yet or if he was seen on the river. That puts him ahead of his 9 ...

Be thankful that you are not flying into Anchorage. Juneau has great public transportation and a wonderful trail system. It is a lot easier to get around and a lot more hiker friendly than Anchorag...

Re: radio rocks! & WX reception
I've been able to improve WX radio reception by attaching a length of wire to the headphone input using an old headphone jack and then clipping the wire to a tree. It takes some adjustments, b...

Avoid Glacier Bay
As an avid ( read obsessed - my wife and I paddle around 1000-1200 miles a summer) kayaker in Southeast Alaska I would argue strongly against paddling in Glacier Bay (GB) if you are an independent...

Re: Ultralight Radios
I've been using a very light-weight Sangean AM/FM/WX/TV radio for about five years and have found it to be good here in Southeast Alaska for WX and AM reception. My model is no longer sold, but...

Re: Water Pooling/Flowing?
Chris, I live in a rain forest. The ground is often damp when we set the pyramid or our tarps. Site location is key if it is wet or the expectation of rain. Like a tent, you want to avoid the...

The Mega Light is a nice pyramid, but it isn't as tall, nor does it have the same footprint as the Oware 9x9. You mentioned three adults and gear, so you might consider that against the lower ...
