I also enjoy snowshoeing, nordic & alpine skiing, cycling, kayaking, photography, and solo trips.

Try McNett's Myrazyme. It's an enzyme, not a chemical, and won't damage the fabric but really works for getting rid of mildew odor. Or any other odor for that matter (shoes,etc.).
