My Locale Boulder, CO
About Me I started backpacking as a teenager in southern appalachia. My summers in college were spent in mountain heaven, glacier national park. Since then, I've lived and played in the high sierras, the cascades, and now the colorado front range. Walking into the mountains for a few days with a light pack never seems to lose its charm. I recently picked up a bad habit called climbing.

Headlamp Geekery
Despite frequently depending on headlamps, for some reason comparing the attributes of various models goes beyond the limits of my gear geekery. I came across some pretty thorough testing of a broa...

4ish oz
I bet something with 3-4 oz of high loft down would do you better. That Ex lite also doesn't have a hem, so heat can escape that way. This is a good deal and pretty light: http://www.montbe...

I'd love it if this pack was suitable for running but I'm not holding my breath, since thats a hard thing to pull off. Wide (on the chest) ergonomic shoulder straps are a plus. The two lowe...

i went with the borah gear vest, and it just arrived today. As I had hoped, there is not much to review here, its utterly simple, it weighs to spec and it fits (albeit a little roomier than I would...

I'll be interested to see how the polartec power wool stuff works. I find myself going back and forth between polartec high efficiency (MEC T2) and my light wool hoody depending on the activity...

t2 + alpine
I've found both the driclime & ran VR alpine very effective over a thin base when i'm moving in colder temps. If you think the marmot is clamy, the rab vapour rise (with equilibrium out...

Re: HMG Porter with ski carry modifications: anyone have one?
I had this done to my 3400 ice pack with full W/NW Dyneema. I think if you're doing a lot of spring skiing with long approaches like in the PNW, than its a great addition. If you'll only be...

hem lift
I just thought I'd add something about the helix, since I was one of the folks who criticized the hem lift. I still think this is a pretty darn nice jacket at an amazing price. I just returned ...

Gossamer Gear Gorilla
I'm very impressed with this pack. I tried out a few packs for a planned AT thru hike (didn't pan out yet), and this was far and a away my favorite. With the stay and sitpad, the pack conforms...
