About Me Backpack mostly in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana (yes, there is backpacking here!), with occasional trips to Isle Royale NP and Shenandoah NP. Have backed off a half-step from true ultralight to "verylight." Husband, father, and Grandpa by good fortune; CPA by profession; also enjoy golf and chess.

Jason - about lids
Hi, Jason: I don't disagree with your point about lids serving no function much of the time. This particularly applies to the flat lid found on the SP Trek 700 pot (the one sold as part of a set...

Equinox bivy
If price is your main concern, the Equinox will be fine. It's not waterproof, so you'll want to use a tarp with it. It's also a cut a little large - which means it tends to get a little twisted as ...

Silponcho, Equinox Terrapin
I've used both of these successfully, though I prefer the Silponcho. Both kept me dry; the Silponcho has a drawstring in the rear hem that lets you cinch it around the pack then tie around your wai...

It's my sleep "system"
My luxury item is a really cushy bed. I start with the MSR Zoid 1 tent (only about 5 ounces heavier than the Salathe bivy and Granite Gear White Lightning tarp it replaced - both of which were also...

One more flip-flop
Yet another waffle, after several more months of experience with the Virga (and a little side detour with the Mariposa, which I could never quite make work.) For most trips, I'm going to revert ...

Something to check out...
...because I was too lazy to go look myself. Would the Jetboil cooking system and/or Companion Cup fit your needs? I don't know what kind of stove you use now - perhaps you'd save enough weight ...

In GEAR » 500 ml baby nalgene as mug?
March 02, 8:55am

One other thing about Nalgene
There's one other advantage to Nalgene Lexan bottles: they're marked for measuring. Comes in handy when your cook kit isn't so marked. (Nalgene Cantenes and Platypuses aren't marked either.)

I agree
That's a very good point. Ultralight for the sake of ultralight left me with a very hollow feeling, too. That may be part of the frustration I was alluding to in my earlier post. I think I heard so...

Good thoughts, all
Very interesting stuff. (Regarding the parents thing: I come from a small, rural, Southern Ohio county where everyone is about one marriage away from three-eyed kids.) Richard: I don't climb, so...

Perhaps the market is re-grouping
I think the market may simply be pausing to consolidate (or co-opt, depending on your politics) the innovations being made by cutting-edge companies like Gossamer Gear, TarpTent, SixMoonDesigns, an...

I've used this off and on for several years, in combination with both the Integral Designs Bug Liner and a bivy sack (most often the ID Salathe.) I've found it to be a versatile, simple shelte...

Snow Peak Mini Solo Ti Cookset
I got this to replace the Trek 700 pot. Then I became briefly enamored of the Jetboil PCS, which is well-designed but heavy. The Snow Peak Mini-Solo with a spoon and the Snow Peak Gigapower stove weig...

Jetboil Personal Cooking System
There's a lot to like about this stove. It sips fuel, boils fast, and is well thought out. The cup that protects the base of the pot during transport doubles (triples?) as a measuring cup and a sm...

I got this tent to replace my MSR Hubba because the SL1 is half a pound lighter. It's not quite as convenient to get into and out of as the Hubba, but that's the price you pay for the weigh...

Evernew .9 Liter pot
Excellent pot - the one I use with an alcohol stove. It's not my first choice with canister stoves, however. It's a short, wide-bottom pot, so it's a bit tippy on the narrow-diameter suppo...

I fully agree with everything Douglas Hus had to say about this tent. It's my tent of choice. However, like most MSR gear, it's heavier than comparable competing products. (I still like MSR ge...

I'd agree that this is a light, functional cookset. However, it has two flaws that keep it from being a 5: 1) The pots don't have measuring marks. This simple addition would greatly increas...
