My Locale San Francisco Bay Area
About Me I backpacked and climbed a lot from 1972 through the 1980s using a heavy-weight approach. In the 1990s other things filled my time. In 2001 I was again backpacking, but with a light weight approach. Most of my trips are to the sierras with a base weight normally around 9lbs.

Like others I would suggest the northern sections of the AT in the spring: plenty of rain, mud and you might even get some bugs. It been years since I have spent significant time on the smoky's...

I don't think it was just the moisture getting warmer. Before I put the jacket on my hand would get damp as I ran it across the back of the shirt. After the break with the dropstopper jacket ...

Going with just a 5x8 tarp would be a gamble... but the odds are decent that you won't get night time rain on the JMT in August. Of course, it can happen. There is a nice article about using ...

Sealskinz Ultra Grip Black Glove
I tried these for part of a season and gave up. My fingers often felt cold and damp. Deterity isn't as good as I would have expected given the modest thickness of these gloves. I hated them.
