IF durability is a prime concern then look to Gore Tex jackets and/or jacket sold thru a vendor/brand with a lifetime satisfaction warranty. I sent a 20yr old leaky Goretex jacket back to Gore Japa...

Maybe you just need to size up to a large? It is a baselayer afterall, with a slim fit that needs to stay tight for the fabric to work its magic.

I always wear my summer gaiters when hiking so in my case this feature provides no added value in a shortie. Useful feature on my long winter gaiters though.
