My Locale Bridger Mountains
About Me I backback most frequently in the Rockies, and most often take three-day trips. Over the past five years I've served as a Forest Service volunteer in Wyoming and Montana, doing trail maintenance. As I get older I'm always looking for ways to lighten my pack load but I'm far from ultralight. I especially like base camp trips, with day hikes from a fixed camp.

Another suggestion
You might try one of REI's periodic sales of its rental gear. I once snagged a big North Face car-camping tent for about $100. Had a tear I had to fix but otherwise just fine.

Another vote for STP
Sierra Trading Post always has many tents listed, from high end makers like Mountain Hardware to less ritzy (but very good) makers such as Alps. For a tent that will be used only slightly, that'...

Jerry's chart is about right, though it ignores the third great recent contributor - ranking third after the Bush tax cuts (by far the biggest) and Iraq war. That is the "war" or what...

Sabine's right that the Milford Track is crowded in the NZ summer. Access is controlled, you purchase a permit for set days and must overnight in the designated lodges (for "guided" v...
