My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

dehyrdrating my own food
Being an engineer that doesn't get paid as an engineer anymore, I've been playing with dehydrating. I dehydrated some food in my Brevil Oven which goes down to 120 F so it works okay. F...

Re: small pyramids. Duomid vs oware 8x8
I have MYOG 9 feet long. I would never make it shorter. About 1 foot all around isn't very usable because the walls slope up and rain can splash in a little it seems like 8 feet is too s...

Re: I never meant to be my own gear maker
I don't see why you need a footprint period. The floor is already waterproof. A footprint might protect the floor so it would last a long time. If you have 70 D silnylon, that would prov...

Re: Alienation.
You have a point, but Did people on the farm feel the same way when factories took over? In many ways, farm life is better and factories have ruined everything. But many of us now think th...

Re: Attaching Umbrella to a Pack
Maybe an umbrella is designed to be held in your hands, but if you want it attached to your pack, a different shape would be better. Like two poles straight up, then bent sideways going forward ...

Re: Re: Worn clothes don't count towards base pack weight?
packed weight is carried on shoulders/hips, worn weight is ditributed evenly regardless, it's all just a tool. 12 pounds (or whatever) is a good goal for pack weight. If you included worn ...
