Since I don't use trekking poles, I didn't really think of that option. But now that you mention it, it actually might be a pretty good idea. I'll look into that. Thanks!

Tyvek
Tyvek is pretty tough stuff in resisting tears. It's probably not perfectly waterproof for long term deluges, but it's not bad.
