In the Los Padres where trails are sometimes so bad you slow to 1 mile an hour, what we do is we plan to have alternative destinations. We'll try to make it to some place and have back-up plans...

Traveling light
I'm going to Hawaii. I want to travel as light as possible. Can I make everything I need fit into a day pack? I may bring a 45 degree sleeping quilt so we can go camping. Any tips?

We've cached water before. The only tip I can give you is that plastic milk jugs don't hold up well to extreme heat or sun.
