My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: How to start a flame war about books
Population of people that are backpackers is small - can't make any money selling to them You have to appeal to people on some popular theme - like "reality TV" or something

yeah, unsolicited advice is usually futile Interesting to see his reaction to your lighter gear. Maybe "lightbulb will go off" at some point and he'll solicit your advice : )

Some day I'm going to make my way over there - a bit far away though. May as well stop at the Wallowas. I assume you have a fairly light pack. Did John realize maybe he should lighten his ...

I've crossed at "the ropes" and up above at the foot of Eliot glacier. Both are doable but not my favorite. It doesn't seem to be on the Forest Service radar to fix it. Yeah,...
