My Locale Western US
About Me Mostly 2 to 3 day loops, with a couple weeklong trips too. Debating whether to go 2 weeks or more. Lightening up but with an eye towards toughness and hiking convenience (secure drying on the trail. quick set up, etc...), but also a bit better food (and beverage) for most overnights. Then again I might want to do a spartan "fast n'light" overnight ... and the gear closet grows.
I'll update my gear list tomorrow ...

Re: Weather for southern AZT and western Grand Enchantment Trail (AZ and NM) in Mid-March to Mid-April

Great article, with the trial and tribulations faced (self-doubt, hungry bear altering the gear list, etc...).

Plenty of other space for bikes
There's more than enough other public lands for bike riding IMO, as wilderness itself is a fairly small portion. Once a wheeled vehicle is exempted, lawyers from the extractive industries will ...

Re: The inevitable bike legalization of the JMT
Hope not. Backpacking the northern part of the TRT this summer, I was the only backpacker with a mass of mountainbikers speeding around me. Most were friendly about it but there were 2 close call...

Walking in the cold and dark
I'd primarily add the pack with a gallon of water and keep walking in the dark cold since you are planning to winter hike. Also test out your base-layers. Then select the other activities men...

The area has been getting rain off and on ... some fairly massive a few wks ago (just got a 5-month contract nearby). Instead of hanging out in the river fork channels, you may try looping Woodlan...

Re: Re: How does one fight for permits/trailhead quotas in Colorado?
@Erica - for the 4 Passes Loop, the overcrowding occurs around August/September with relatively good weather....maybe a permit system? Past 2 PM however, many trad packers started setting up cam...

Maroon Bells overcrowding
There were a lot of hikers (backpackers, day hikers, and a few trail runners) in August but far fewer around 4th of July (of course that's when I got hit with massive rain). Even in August I w...
