About Me 35, male. Software Engineer living in downtown San Francisco.

I'm an intermediate/advanced backpacker. In excellent shape. Love the outdoors.

Avid fisherman. I always carry my rod with me when I am backpacking.

I've climbed Mount Shasta, hiked most of Yosemite, visited Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

I'm going to do a 4 week section hike of the PCT in 2013.

You could say I'm addicted.

I have a bunch of backpacking videos over at

Is cuben fiber flammable?
I assume it probably is flammable because if it wasn't they would be touting it as a feature left and right. That said, I can't find any information on the Interwebs about its fire retar...

Re: Hot tent
I think the issue here is the fire hazard. Silnylon + fire isn't a good idea. Is this a common setup or are you a one off? Camping with fire+silnylon doesn't seem like a good idea.

tarp..
I guess that's a good point. I don't REALLY need the hot tent but it just looks SO inviting to be able to retire into a warm tent for 4 hours until it's time for sleep. It seems co...

2 or 3 person snowtrekker tent? They are $1k each so I don't really want BOTH :-(

Layering down equipment?
I haven't seen any vendors really embrace layering down equipment. For example, it seems to make sense to have layered sleeping bags. Each would nest inside the previous bag and provide add...

Yosemite Valley in the winter?

Re: Re: Recommended gear list for ultralight winter backpacking?
I am going to do a hot tent + hammock setup. I would prefer it be warmer inside if I'm going to spend HOURS inside at night. I will just read and use my iphone. If I can get a USB charger s...

I know this is NOT the response you expected but I would do the math on batteries. I did some experiments with my iPhone 4S and I can get about 3.5 days of usage if I use it for two hours a nigh...

I'm looking to get started in ultralight winter backpacking. It would be nice to have a template for gear to start with. I am planning on re-using much of my 3 season gear (hammock, pack,...
