My Locale Alaska
About Me I have recently retired as a career smokejumper. Like most Backpackinglight members I enjoy my outdoor adventures, such as thru-hiking the AT, CDT, the Desert Trail and PCT. I recently completed a 1,000 mile traverse of northern Alaska. You can see photos and the stories at my website.

Down sleeping bags last a long, long time
My two most-used down bags have something on the order of 500 nights each of use. If they have lost any loft at all I have yet to notice. I think a whole lot depends on how you use and wash and ...

50 below zero
No thermometer, 50 below was the low for nearby Bettles Alaska that day. (The high was 45 below.) I can honestly say I was prepared for it. I had two sleeping pads, a sleeping bag and an overbag...

Advice and liability
I don't see liability as being much of an issue. Medical advice is dispensed commonly and freely on this forum as it is: foot care, water treatment (or not,) repetitive use injuries, etc.

Injury Forum: Great idea
I like it. Pertains directly to the forum subject matter and a major issue, especially on long hikes.

Cuben shelter
Buck, I'm curious, is your Hexamid made with 0.51 or 0.74 cuben? I'm pretty sure it's the 0.51. It was the standard model which I bought 2 years ago. As far as packs go, maybe the...
