My Locale Southeast
About Me I've been backpacking for several years, and am not an ultralight guy...I'm probably teetering on the line between light weight and traditional. I normally carry 25 - 35 lbs (total weight including food and water). I typically go on 5 - 6 trips a year consisting of weekend trips with a longer (1 - 2 weeks) one mixed in there. I have been section hiking the AT since late '07, and am a quarter of the way through it. Other than the AT and local hikes I have also hiked in the Sierras and Southern Utah.

Re: tarptent?
Another vote for the Tarptent, except I'm gonna recommend the Squall Classic. I have an original Squall (sil-nylon), and it is a wonderfully gigantic shelter for 1 person. You can lay all you...

Re: Tyvek Ground Sheet/Cloth for Tent?
If you have any new housing developments being built in your area cruise through there and go through the trash. I know that sounds nasty, but usually there will be some piles of wood and other de...

Re: Silk liners
I use a silk liner primarily to keep stuff off of the inside of my bags, but have found as other posters have mentioned that the liner is a pain. I move around a lot in my sleep, and the liner get...

Re: Poncho Vs. Rain Jacket
I'm still in the experimental stages, but the short answer for me is it depends on the temperatures. In general, if it is going to be above 50 degrees I'm probably gonna go with my Equinox...

Re: You know you've hit bottom when..
I haven't hit the low point yet cause I am not yet truly a UL'er. But so far on the way down I have bought 4 packs, 5 sleeping bags, a couple of stoves, tons of shoes/boots, a few tents an...

Re: What do you sleep on?
3/4 length TR Prolite 4 with a short piece of a cheap blue foam pad for my legs and feet. The blue foam pad piece also makes a nice camp chair.

I’ve been using this headlamp (both the original and newer version) for years. The reviewers above pretty much covered everything with this headlamp, so I am not going to repeat all that. It’s light...

I have used this tent many nights over the last few years. It has been my main inclement weather/winter tent, so it typically sees the worst weather I go out in. Well, let’s get right into this. ...

I have been using this tent off and on for a few years now, and it has served me well. I use it as a solo tent. I have the original version in sil-nylon (the pre-Squall II version). I use trekking ...
