Ultra, Javan Dempsey customized his quilt with a pocket/flap at the foot end to insert a pad into. This will be warmer than having the extra air-space that comes w/wrapping the quilt around you...

Without a bivy, you will definitely be colder in an open-end tarp vs a mid-style shelter. Not sure I can quantify, though, Aaron. Maybe 5deg or more? A stiff breeze will definitely be noticed. ...

If it improves your outdoor experience, then it's a no-brainer! Good for you, Craig. Comfortable living space is sometimes worth a TON! Hassle-free setup is worth more.
