That is curious. I know for a fact they drop from trees, but it would still take a while to go from hat to his face. Maybe dropped on his shoulder?

If using velcro, I'd sew the loop part on the mesh so it won't snag all the time when you pack it up separately.

This local story reminded me of your testing. I wonder if it's really smell they use for phones or (ultrasonic) sound? To smell it while inside a ziploc under water is quite a feat.
