My Locale Pacific Northwest
About Me I'm a flatlander hick from southeast Texas who fell in love with the mountains after spending two summers in New Mexico and one in Colorado. I was mostly a dayhiker until my kids got old enough that I wasn't spending every spare minute at a game or recital. Now I get out for multiday trips 4-5 times a year. I like to keep moving, cover a lot of ground. Not big on lounging around, even if it's gorgeous. I don't like out-and-backs. There's just too much of Creation to see!

Re: Backpacking: Trinity, Spider Meadow, Lyman Lakes, Image Lake, Buck Creek Pass, Trinity
I did that exact trip last year (see http://texasbb.net/files/Spider-Buck-2010/) and figured it to be 45 miles and about 9750 vertical feet. But that included side trips from Buck Creek Pass up (a...

Re: Backpack for a 6'8", 225 pound 18 year old kid
I'd check into the ULA Catalyst at http://www.ula-equipment.com/ . I'm 6'5", about 200 lbs, and the size-large Catalyst fits me. They have a size-XL beyond that.

ULA example
Here's my ULA Catalyst in action: It's a pretty simple system...couple of shock cords with adjustable locks on them. Very convenient.

Mostly yes
They speed me up in general, especially on the uphills, rough downhills, and stream crossings. But there are some cases where they slow me down. If I'm REALLY trying to make time on the downh...

Suunto Core, but not for the compass
I have Suunto Core and like it fine. Not the cheapest, though, and I wouldn't get it (or any other watch) for the compass. Couldn't live without the altimeter, but as someone else suggest...

Re: Focused on the poles
"Does anyone have comments about poles as a mental distraction?" It can happen, but for me it's only a slightly greater temptation than when hiking poleless. For the most part, po...

I'm likewise hoping to do an eastern Pasayten loop this summer/fall. My thought has been to do the Boundary Tr from Iron Gate to Cathedral, then link up Remmel Creek, Coleman Ridge, Fire Creek...
