About Me I enjoy being outdoors, either alone or in the company of others (human/canine). Thanks to BPL, I am learning to hike my own hike while balancing childlike delight with adultish deliberation. Recent backpacking trips include Dark Canyon Wilderness, Grand Gulch, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Escalante in UT. Closer to home, Lost Creek Wilderness and the Indian Peaks/RMNP region in CO.

Ever blown a seam on an ultralight pack?
I recently experienced a failure of one of the load lifter straps on my 2008 Golite Pinnacle. In fact, it tore right off at both ends. Took it to Golite, and they immediately identified some issu...

MYOG VB Overalls
Even though spring is well on its way, there are plenty of frigid nights left in the Colorado high country. With those in mind, I am experimenting with a new MYOG vapor barrier project. I've ...

Re: Tarptent Scarp1 (4 season -freestanding)
Franco, Thank you! The link and those photos are a great help, especially the full shot of the inner tent body. It looks like the mesh window is set high enough to block any (or most) spindrif...

Re: Salt Creek Canyon, Canyonlands NP
Roger, We had planned to spend another evening on the trail in Chelser Park, and this determined our return route even though that third night was cut short. But I imagine that Salt Creek Road ...

A Few Scarp 1 Questions
Hello All, A recent night under a tarp in hard blowing spindrift has reminded me of the benefits of a fully enclosable shelter for winter (perhaps even *gasp* with a floor). The Scarp 1 is an o...

Re: Thorofare vs Rail Riders
Many of the railrider pants now have a two choices of inseam length- might help with your issue! I have a pair of the 30" inseam weatherpants and like them, though the velcro cuff took some t...

Re: Mount Rogers Trip Report
Jamie, Thanks. Really nice report. Much of my hiking lately has been in Utah, but this makes me nostalgic for the kinds of conditions in western MA and New England where I grew up. All the bl...

Re: windshirt and rainjacket, redundant?
Interesting thread! A few more comments about the windshirt. -I find a windshirt useful when I anticipate snow but I need very little insulation- for example, snowshoeing in deep snow when ener...
