My Locale Midwest
About Me I am in my late-40's and really got interested in backpacking about 10 years ago as a way to have some concentrated time with my boys, now all finishing up high school or in college. I try to get out a few times a year, including a bi-annual trip to Colorado for some of the big stuff. Otherwise I am stuck in the very boring midwest where everything exciting is a good day's drive away.

Thanks for the input
Thanks for the input, guys. Nice to know that its normal, not a big deal, and I need to just make it part of my routine before laying my head down.

Sleeping bag w/o open baffles?
I need some input. I recently took my new Enlightened Revelation X 30 degree quilt to the Smokeys and spent the last (third) night in a shelter just below Clingman's Dome. The wind was strong...

REI Stuff Travel Pack
I just took a look at my REI Stuff Travel Pack and the lid pocket is small so I don't think it figures much into the 22 litres but it is sewn in there pretty good. The cinch top works well so ...

REI Stuff Travel Pack
I have the REI Stuff Travel Pack and it is an awesome deal. 22 liters, 10 oz, $30 and made of tough material. For once REI didn't over-engineer a product. Simple shoulder straps, no hip belt...

SPOT vs ACR? Need some advice
I have begun taking more solo hikes and my wife wants to make sure I can get help if needed. She would love to be able to track my progress as well but getting help is her main concern. The previ...

Settled on a sweet spot
For years my goal was to go as light as possible and last year I hiked a 56 mile loop in the GSMNP with a 9.5 lb base for a four day trip. It stormed like crazy, folks I hiked with got hurt, and I...
