My Locale Oregon and Washington
About Me I started hiking about 45 years ago. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter) 20 to 50 miles. Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.

Re: Re: Top Coverings
55 F - if I wear anything I'll sweat. Thin nylon shirt will be more than adequate. Hard to evaluate what happens when you have three layers.

I like the way they erected obelisks. Build a chamber. Fill it with sand. Put obelisk base sideways on top. Open door on side of chamber to let sand out. Base of Obelisk slides down into the c...

Re: Cold weather canisters
If it's an upright canister, it loses a lot of heat to evaporative cooling. Insulating from the air is a second order effect. If you put in an iron based hand warmer, that would make a big ...

coil or toothed zippers
I'm never sure whether coil or toothed zippers are better For light things like a sleeping bag or jacket, #3 coil is probably best? They don't make #3 toothed zippers. For seperating...
