About Me Began hiking in the Carolinas, some in Virginia and now in Florida - much less variation in terrain, I'm sad to say, but beautiful in its own right. A Gatewood Cape w/Serenity is my primary solo shelter nowadays.

My first hiking poles by Komperdell. Heavy @ ~20+ oz/pair and the antishock has never worked well (that's how I discovered I don't need antishock), but I love 'em. From 1996. Still...

Jerry's right about fleece as a good option. I'd rather do one fleece layer than two light base layers.

Is this for active use or in camp/sleeping? If active, I'll let the snow shoeing, skiing crowd offer input. If the latter, then why not add a light puffy insulating layer, a-la the Montbell...
